From Reykjavik to KEF Airport by Flybus_Reykjavik Excursions

If you would like to travel to Iceland airport, Kevlarvik International Airport 
(Keflavíkurflugvöllur, KEF), from the capital, Reykjavík, you can choose either by a rental car or by bus. As to the rental experience, you can refer to the article, 【Iceland】 car rental precautions_Reykjavik rent a car,  in our blog further.
It is our actual experience. (It is a nice try and we quite recommend for it!)

To reach the airport of KEF from your hotel, of course, you can drive to and stop the rental car at the specified parking lot. But some bloggers have shared bad experiences for this way resulting from the extra expenses in the credit card bills afterwards for unknown reasons.

Besides, our fright is so earlier that we choose to return the car back two days ago before leaving and make a reservation for the airport bus, that is, Flybus.

(The Flybus has been run by Reykjavik Excursions.)

Our return fright is at 7:35 am and bound for the ARN airport at Stockholm. 
For the sake of smooth checking in, we should reach the KEF airport before 5:35 am. 
The travelling time from Reykjavík to KEF airport is about 1 hour at most. 
So we book the pick-up time at 4:30 online.

The following are the reservation procedures.

1. Firstly, go to the website of the Flybus.  https://www.re.is/flybus/

↑As the above picture shows, you can choose either way based on your own needs.

The ways are from KEF airport to Flybus terminus in the Reykjavík downtown and from the pick-up stops in the urban districts to KEF airport, respectively.We choose the later one.

2. Then you can choose one way or return tickets.

↑We choose the one way ticket and proceed to next step.

3. Choose the departure date, time and the numbers of passengers first.

↑Here we take the departure time at 4:00 am on 31/Mar/2017 as an example.

As to the pick-up stops, you can check whether the names of your hotels are on the list or not.

↑Because we live in the hotel of Reykjavik Rainbow, we choose the pick-up stop at “Apartment K, Þingholtsstræti 2-4”. 
This stop is just next to our hotel in l minute on feet.

If your hotel's name is not on the list as we do, there is a small tip to search for the nearby pick-up stops.

  3.1  Firstly, google your hotel on the map.

  3.2 Then zoom in the map and you will see there are some more hotels' names shown.

  3.3 Check whether these names are on the lists or not.↓

↑For instance, our hotel is Reykjavik Rainbow Guesthouse. After zooming in the google map, there all two hotels nearby.

Then go back to check it on the pick-up list again.

As you may be aware, the location of Apartment K is closer, so we choose it.

(If you are afraid of making the wrong choices, you can draw a parallel between google map and the text, such us the streets' names online.)

4. Payment

After clicking the chosen time, location and numbers of passengers, press confirmation button. The reservation will just jump to the cart in the upper right corner on the screen.↓

↑Then click the button “GO TO CHECKOUT”.

As follows, you can check the tour details you have made earlier before paying.

If all the texts are consistent with what you have chosen, press the “Confirm payment” to pay by credit card.↓

Then you have made a reservation and prepaid for the tickets successfully!!!

5. Confirm the order.

Then you will receive two e-mails from Reykjavik Excursions.
One is for the booking receipt, and the other is for the e-tickets as PDF file.

(It is very important so we have to repeat it once more again!!!!)

Here we would like to draw your particular attention that you need to reach the pick-up stop prior 30 minutes earlier than you have booked!!!!

In other words, if you book for 4:30 am to pick you up, you need to reach the stop before 4:00 am!

We had made a funny and stupid MISTAKE here so we reveal this precaution for kind sake……><::: Below is to describe how this MISERABLE MATTER happened.

BLUE received this e-mail on 13th/Jun and then downloaded the e-ticket file on the cell phone without doubt. We checked the e-ticket on the smart phone the day before leaving Reykjavík city.

As you may be aware, the screen of the cell phone is small and usually you are used to zoom in it once the file is open. We did it at that moment and then missed the “important notation” just in up and down rows.

It shows on the e-ticket as

「Pick up starts up to 30 minutes before departure」

Therefore, please be reminded of reaching the pick-up location/stop 30 minutes before the booking time you have made!!!!!!

Now come back to the day of leaving.

We reached “Apartment K” at 4:25 am and waited there. Until 4:40 am, we found it is a little odd.

Then we checked the e-ticket in detail once again and found the notation we missed earlier at this moment!!!!!

Oh my goodness! The bus drove away already……

Fortunately, BLUE has heard that some locations of the guesthouses in Iceland may not be correct on the google map. One may need to make a phone call directly to the hotel.

For this concern, we recharged some quota on skype in Taiwan before going abroad just in case.

So this is just the moment! 

Pink called the Flybus by skype.

It took few times that the phone call has been answered.

However, it is an answering machine and you have to direct your call following instruction so many times and repeating more and more again without knowing the reasons.

Finally, someone has been reached and he arranged another bus to pick us up at the same location. About 5 minutes later, there came a small bus to pick us to the bus terminus.

Then we transferred to another bigger tour bus to proceed to KEF airport. We now realize why we need to reach the pick-up stop prior 30 minutes before the booking time.

That’s because 

if you choose 4:30 am as your departure time, Flybus would arrange small bus to pick travelers at each stops to the bus terminus and all of these travelers would transfer to another big tour bus to the airport afterwards.

In the end, we reached the KEF airport and thanks to the nice service of Reykjavik Excursions/Flybus.

p.s. 
In fact, BLUE has some alternatives instead.

Because our hotel “Reykjavik Rainbow” is not too far away from the bus terminus, it takes about 20 minutes on feet to the terminus.

Once we can’t contact with Flybus, at least we can walk to the bus terminus or just go by taxi (But it costs a lot!).

As a result, we sum up and underline some points if you would like to take the Flybus.

●If your hotel is within the urban districts, Flybus would arrange a small bus to pick you up and change to the bigger tour bus at bus terminus to bound for the KEF airport.

●If your hotel is not too far away from the bus terminus, we suggest you may walk there directly as well.

●Be reminded of reaching or waiting at the pick-up stop at least 30 minutes before the departure/booking time you have made.
